Augmented Reality in Informal Learning Environments: Investigating Short-term and Long-term Effects
While many researchers have qualitatively examined the affordances and constraints of AR in educational settings, only few studies exist that tried to quantify the effect of AR on learning performance. To contribute to filling this research gap, we conducted a pretest-posttest-posttest crossover field experiment with 24 participants at a mathematics exhibition to measure the effect of AR on acquiring and retaining mathematical knowledge in an informal learning environment, both short-term (i.e., directly after visiting the exhibition) and long-term (i.e., two months after the museum visit). Our empirical results show that museum visitors performed significantly better on knowledge acquisition and retention tests related to augmented exhibits than to non-augmented exhibits directly after visiting the exhibition (i.e., short-term), but this positive effect of AR vanished in the long run
The Effect of Marker-less Augmented Reality on Task and Learning Performance
Augmented Reality (AR) technologies have evolved rapidly over the last years, particularly with regard to user interfaces, input devices, and cameras used in mobile devices for object and gesture recognition. While early AR systems relied on pre-defined trigger images or QR code markers, modern AR applications leverage machine learning techniques to identify objects in their physical environments. So far, only few empirical studies have investigated AR\u27s potential for supporting learning and task assistance using such marker-less AR. In order to address this research gap, we implemented an AR application (app)with the aim to analyze the effectiveness of marker-less AR applied in a mundane setting which can be used for on-the-job training and more formal educational settings. The results of our laboratory experiment show that while participants working with AR needed significantly more time to fulfill the given task, the participants who were supported by AR learned significantly more

Carrying out engineering and geological zoning is important for the future planning of construction in the study area in the future. A huge role in this is played by the dangerous geological processes common in this territory. Only a comprehensive analysis can give a sufficiently complete and reliable picture of the state of the studied territory by the degree of its favorableness for further development. It is an assessment of the presence of dangerous engineering and geological processes, data on the speed of their development and spread in space and time, as well as taking into account their possible negative impact on construction and further operation, will prevent economic and social damage

Augmented Reality in VET: Benefits of a qualitative and quantitative study for workplace training
Augmented Reality (AR) is widely used in various training and learning settings, like schools, universities, and workplaces. The effects of individual AR learning apps on learning performance in formal learning environments have been examined in detail in various studies. However, up to today only few empirical studies have investigated AR’s potential for supporting learning at workplaces and for vocational education and training (VET). In this study we target this research gap by using AR applications for Microsoft Hololens and tablet/smartphone to support learning in technically oriented workplace trainings. We conducted an observational field study with 135 professionals from the event technology industry and the results of our qualitative and quantitative data analysis suggest that integrating AR elements into trainings at workplaces has the potential to enable training experiences which can hardly be simulated with traditional media and which are perceived as beneficial for motivation and learning performance
AUGMENTED REALITY FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING – A LITERATURE REVIEW ON THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL FOUNDATIONS
Augmented Reality (AR) based teaching and learning has evolved rapidly over the past years. Re-searchers have shown that AR has the potential to deliver persuasive learning experiences in for-mal teaching (e.g., in classrooms) and in informal learning environments (e.g., museums). Howev-er, comparatively little extant research is firmly grounded in learning theories and applies rigor-ous empirical methods to evaluate the effect of AR on learning performance. In order to build a cumulative body of knowledge on AR-based instructional design and its effectiveness, it is neces-sary to consolidate both the theoretical foundations of and empirical evidence for using AR for teaching and learning. Against this background we conducted a focused systematic literature re-view on theoretical and empirical foundations of AR in education. We identify theory-based de-sign elements and empirical measures for developing and applying AR teaching and learning ap-plications and consolidate them in a design framework
Improved functional and histochemical outcomes in l-DOPA plus tolcapone treated VMAT2-deficient mice
Parkinson disease is typically treated with L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (or levodopa) co-prescribed with concentration stabilizers to prevent undesired motor fluctuations. However, the beneficial role of the chronic combined therapy on disease progression has not been thoroughly explored. We hypothesized that tolcapone, a catechol-O-methyl-transferase inhibitor, co-administered with levodopa may offer beneficial long-term disease-modifying effects through its dopamine stabilization actions. Here, we followed vesicular monoamine transporter 2-deficient and wild-type mice treated twice daily per os with vehicle, levodopa (20 mg/kg), tolcapone (15 mg/kg) or levodopa (12.5 mg/kg) + tolcapone (15 mg/kg) for 17 weeks. We assessed open field, bar test and rotarod performances at baseline and every 4th week thereafter, corresponding to OFF-medication weeks. Finally, we collected coronal sections from the frontal caudate-putamen and determined the reactivity level of dopamine transporter. Vesicular monoamine transporter 2-deficient mice responded positively to chronic levodopa + tolcapone intervention in the bar test during OFF-periods. Neither levodopa nor tolcapone interventions offered significant improvements on their own. Similarly, chronic levodopa + tolcapone intervention was associated with partially rescued dopamine transporter levels, whereas animals treated solely with levodopa or tolcapone did not present this effect. Interestingly, 4-month progression of bar test scores correlated significantly with dopamine-transporter-label density. Overall, we observed a moderate functional and histopathological improvement effect by chronic dopamine replacement when combined with tolcapone in vesicular monoamine transporter 2-deficient mice. Altogether, chronic stabilization of dopamine levels by catechol-O-methyl-transferase inhibition, besides its intended immediate actions, arises as a potential long-term beneficial approach during the progression of Parkinson disease
